The First Puzzle
Once I picked my engine and refamiliarized myself with how it worked it was time to set up the first puzzle of the game.
After a short introduction in which the narrator explains the player's goal (break into the teacher's computer, change their grade, and escape without getting caught!) they would need to unlock the computer using the teacher's email as a login. Figuring out this email would be the player's first challenge. However, since the player doesn't have access to the computer yet, they would have to use other clues.
In the introduction, I told the player that they had a couple of items that could help them: a roster of all of the teachers in the school and a map of the building. With these items, they could figure out the email.
I decided to allow the player to look at these items simply by clicking a button in the corner of the screen. Perhaps in a future iteration I will put these items in a separate "inventory" screen."
Once they player has figured out the email they make their way to the computer's desktop where they will find several options before them. The gradebook is there but it is also guarded by a password. So the player will have to explore other programs and files on the computer to get in.
Next time: designing a fictional social media platform.
